David Mills > As we set off on our cruise in a boat that resembled one of the BB Riverboats that cruise the Ohio, we saw a herd of water buffalo.
David Mills > Some enterprising locals try to sell souvenirs to tourists on board the boat. These guys wait in the middle of the river for the boats to approach then they paddle out in these little bamboo rafts and latch on to the side of the boats. The boat captains do not slow down.

We were warned by our guides not to open the windows because if they feel like you haven't treated them fairly they may take water, food or cameras. The government is trying to stop them but not too successfully.
David Mills > Ponchos were popular as the rained poured down in the early stage of our cruise. Here you can see some of the limestone hills that characterize the area around Guilin. These were formed at the bottom of the sea as the bodies of small marine animals were deposited and compressed by the tremendous weight of the ocean above them. Later they were pushed up to the surface by the force of adjacent continental plates. Once above the surface they are eroded by the action of naturally acidic rain water that dissolves the calcium salts. This also leads to the formation of caves like the ones we saw the previous day.
David Mills > Carolyn Yang provides shelter for Daniel Mills. Emily Mills patiently waits and Dave Yang captures some video as the hills pass by.
David Mills > One of the larger hills we saw rises near a bend in the river. You can see another river boat in front of us. We were the last in a flotilla of 6 or 7 boats that set out.
David Mills > A Li River fisherman drifts along with his cormorants. The fisherman tie bands around the necks of the cormorants so the cormorants can't swallow big fish. When the cormorants catch fish they eventually return to the boat and fisherman retrieves the unswallowed fish.
David Mills > The hills in this river gorge are beatiful to watch. The locals have given many of the names based on perceived resemblances to animals or other scenes. Some of the resemblances we could see; others seemed quite a stretch. I'm not sure if these hills had a name or not. We would sometimes kid Christine, our guide, that she was getting a little too creative.
David Mills > More of the scenic Guilin countryside slips by. In this shot you can see the masonry wall that has been built along this entire stretch of the river. In many places there were small villages and this wall serves to control flooding.
David Mills > A space finally opened up at the front of the boat and the rain began to subside. Way out front you can see the next boat in line.
